The mom had a severe work related head injury, the dad had cancer and the blended family had 6 kids ranging in age from 4 to 11! They were living in a tiny, drafty single wide trailer with the most limited of resources. My friend and I decided that our holiday treat to each other would be to take the 6 kids to the nearest "big city" (a whopping 10,000 people!) about an hour away. Word got out about our planned excursion with the kids and donations rolled in to help make it a memorable outing! We were able to take the kids out to dinner; although only a McDonalds with a Playland, to these children it had the magic of Disneyland! We then went Christmas shopping and through the generosity of the small town the kids each had some money to spend for gifts as well as some to spend for themselves. With a little help, they decided to draw each other's names....and then on their own initiative figured out that they wanted to pool some of their money to buy something "really nice" for their Mom and Dad. Not one of them spent a penny of the money that was to be their own; they still wanted to do more for others. And although the intent was to make the outing memorable for the kids, it was my friend and I that recieved the most wonderful gift of all in seeing love, sharing, resourcefulness, compassion and hope through the eyes of children of a small town. |
