| Kay from Rochester, IN USA says: | See others from this town | 12-01-2011 | | | | Every quilt has a story. As a way of earning extra "fun" money my friend started picking up black walnuts from people's yards. When she found fabric that had what looked like Black Walnuts printed on it, she had to make a quilt honoring Black Walnuts since the nuts have paid for multiple season Cedar Point passes, quilting fabric, and various other fun things. She used Eleanor Burns' pattern Trip Around the World and named it "Trip Around the Black Walnut Tree". This year's October Black Walnut harvest was especially plentiful and everyone seemed to know her secret of earning extra money. Waiting lines at the hulling stations in Bremen and Rochestrer ranged from one to eight hours long. She learned quickly to take something to do, usually eating a packed lunch, working on homework assignments or taking a power nap as her hands and clothes were not clean enough for hand piecing or quilting. The profits were well worth the waiting time. The money this year goes toward a school mission trip to Guatemala, Mexico. |
