We rode on a wagon pulled by huge draft horses up to Pecos Monument. The people were standing around a bonfire waiting for the local priest to start Las Pasadas. While we were waiting, a village elder started singing the rosary in Spanish. His voice quivered with age, but his pitch was true and clear in the crisp air. The villagers joined in response, and the singing bounced off ancient adobe walls. When the priest arrived, we followed him to the main building. Half of the people went inside, and half stayed outside. We sang the Las Pasadas back an forth in Spanish telling the story of Joseph and Mary trying to find a room.
