My father-in-law grew up poor in semi rural North Carolina. Spending $5 in the 60's for a polaroid at the mall would be multiplied by five for his five sons. That was a Christmas money they could ill afford to throw away. When he found out it had gone up to $10 for pictures with The Man in the Red Suit by the time his grandchildren were born, he decided to do something about it. He decorated his house with lights like the Griswolds, Wore a red suit and grew his snowy white beard a little longer. My daughters were his elves. Local families were encouraged to stop by the front yard, sit on his lap or in his home made sleigh and enjoy a vist, a bit of fruit and candy and parents could take all the photos they wanted..for FREE! He only did this for two years, then passed away from cancer. They were the happiest years of his life...My daughters still claim, Santa Clause was their grandfather. Christmas is a bitter sweet time for us all as we remember the Sherrils Ford Road Santa Clause. |
